Hear, Know, Trust - August 7, 2011
Jesus said: “And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent” (John 17:3). How well do you know Jesus?
Last week we saw that there is rest and freedom in the spirit available to us when we hear the voice of the Lord and don't harden our hearts (Psalm 95:7, Hebrews 4:7). To hear Jesus is to know Him. Sometimes it works the other way also: to learn more about Him is to know Him, and when we know more about Him, we learn to hear His voice. Either way, when we learn to hear and know Jesus, we also learn to trust and obey Him. It just follows naturally, in the Spirit. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me,” Jesus said. John 10:27
How well do you know Jesus? Do you hear Him calling to you? His call is . . .
PERSISTENT – Because He knows what will happen to us if we don't hear His call!
PERSONAL – He singles out whoever He calls.
PUBLIC - When He calls us, our faith sooner or later becomes known to others.
PRECIOUS - He redeems us from the Law of Sin and Death. What is more precious than that?
PRICEY – Responding to His call will cost you everything you hold to be more important than Him.
PERVASIVE – He will transform ALL of you, if you let Him.
POWERFUL – He makes old things new, restores our innocence, and heals the sick. What more should I say?!
PERMANENT – To know Him is eternal life. He said it Himself!
You could probably add more “P” words the above list of characteristics. Such as: “His call brings Peace and Patience.” His call is Perceptive and Perspicacious (“discerning”—yes, I had to look it up too). The point is, the call of His voice is the most transforming event available to humans here are earth. When you answer it, you begin the privilege and joy of getting to KNOW the Lord in reality, in real time, forever .
How well do you know Him?
There's a lot more to say about who Jesus is, and how to learn to hear His voice, but in the meantime, I commend to you this video [CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD] based on a famous sermon entitled “The Seven Way King”, by Dr. Dr S.M. Lockridge, former pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in San Diego (now deceased). At our church, we viewed the video together, then broke into small groups to share with one another what we ourselves know about Jesus. Those who didn't know much were encouraged to ask questions of those who knew more. That's what you should do too!
Blessings to you in the Name of the Lord.
