Word Words - April 10, 2011

God's Word packs creative power today, just as it did at the Beginning, when it is combined with the power of His Holy Spirit. Proverbs 4:20-22 says “Give attention to My Words . . .Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” When we receive God's Word in our spirit-heart, we receive new life, health and wholeness. We are also made capable of mighty exploits.

Jesus said “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23). And again, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it will move” (Matthew 17:20). And yet again: “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them” (Mark 11:24). At the Last Supper, Jesus capped this string of remarkable teachings with these even more remarkable words: “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father” (John 14:12). If Jesus raised people from the dead, so shall we! God's Word says so.

What is the key to this kind of power? Mark 11:21 tells us: “Have faith in God.” But this simple verse is usually translated inaccurately. The Greek says literally: “Have the faith OF God.” No amount of good intentions can muster this kind of faith, which is a gift of God's Spirit. More specifically, the faith that comes from God is the third gift of the Holy Spirit enumerated in1 Corinthians 12:9. This kind of faith leaves no doubt at all about what it can accomplish. When you have it, you will know it.

Our prosperity is tied to God's Word. Joshua said (Joshua 1:8): “This book of Instructions (Law or Precepts) shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.” Jesus, who always focused on the inner life of those who approached him, said it more simply: “If you love Me, do My commandments” (John 14:15). Just do what Jesus said if you love Him, and you'll succeed!

People are held in bondage by the power of their own words. The words that come from most peoples' mouths most of the time are hardly the words of God. When we judge others, condemn others, criticize others – and people do it all the time – we are quoting the enemy of God, not what God thinks or says. In so doing, the words of most people establish the works of the enemy rather than of God in their own lives and the lives of others—often the ones they love the most.

God's Word always . . . brings forth spirit and life (John 6:63) . . . works effectively in those who believe (1 Thessalonians 2:13) . . . bears fruit (Isaiah 55:10-11) . . . is final (Psalm 89:34, 119:89-90) and forever (Matthew 24:35).

God's Word functions like an incorruptible seed within us (1 Peter 1:22-25), bringing forth new life and the ability to love one another. Like other seeds, the seed-words of God are subject to the Law of Seed-time Harvest (Genesis 8:22), which says as long as the earth endures, seeds will bring forth a harvest. God's Word never returns void! Also, good seeds produce “after their own kind”, as we learn from Days 3 and 6 of Creation, when God declared that vegetation and animals would reproduce, each “according to its kind ”(see Genesis 1:11-12 and 24-25). When you plant an apple tree, you get apples, not plums!

Our words function like seeds, bringing forth a sure harvest according to their kind. If we sow negative words, biting words, bitter words, judgmental words, disparagement, despair or other disheartening kinds of words, we will surely reap the same. The Apostle Paul said it this way: “Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7).

You can have what you want in Christ Jesus if what you want comes from a heart filled with the faith of God. When God's faith talks, it releases more faith, hope and love—not condemnation, fear and unbelief. When God's faith talks, mountains are moved!

We are to be imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1). Jesus never proclaimed the problem, only God's solutions. Jesus only said what God said! Jesus never spoke about present circumstances. He spoke about desired results. Above all, He used the Word of God to defeat the enemy. Therefore, we should do the same. It's not too difficult. Jesus said, “If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32).

Read God's Word so you can learn to abide in the Word. Read it out loud because faith comes by hearing. Sow the Word deep in your heart because out of the abundance of the heart spring the issues of life. Speak the Word over yourself, your family and your friends. Then you shall surely reap a harvest of blessing, favor and prosperity in the sight of God!
